About St. Kate's's ILL Service
St. Catherine University Libraries provides interlibrary loan (ILL) service to obtain books and theses or photocopies of items not owned by the Libraries. This service is extended to current faculty, students, and staff of the College and to the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.
Requests for students registered on the St. Paul campus are processed by the St. Paul campus ILL staff. Requests for Minneapolis students are processed by the Minneapolis campus ILL staff.
Holders of Neighbors or Alumni cards may wish to consult their local branch library to request items they need through ILL.
Journal copies:
Please consult the Journals a to Z for a listing of journal titles owned by St. Kate's or available in full text by way of Library databases. Patrons are responsible for making their own copies from a journal or database.
We will accept ILL requests from students who live outside the seven county Twin Cities Metro area (defined as Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott, and Washington counties) for copies of journal articles owned by the Library. Please choose Distance Ed. in the drop down Status menu in your ILLiad profile.
Books or theses:
Because the length of time you may keep an item will be set by the lending library, we recommend that you pick up the item as soon as you are notified. Patrons living outside the seven county Metro area (see above for these counties) may request that ILL books be mailed to them when they become available. Patrons are responsible for returning books to the St. Kate's library by the due date.
Materials only available out of state:
It is our policy to accept requests for materials outside of the state only for graduate students, staff and faculty. Generally, the delivery time is longer than most undergraduates can wait. If you are an undergraduate and would like us to make an exception to this policy, please have your instructor contact the ILL staff granting permission for you. Please contact ILL staff for further questions.
Before requesting a book through ILL, it is very important to check CLICnet to find out if St. Kate's or another library in the CLIC consortium owns the book you need.
CLIC consortium libraries include Augsburg, Bethel, Concordia, Hamline, Macalester, Northwestern and St. Thomas. Items not at your St. Kate's library but at another CLIC library can be requested online. Books requested via CLICnet take about two working days. We do not mail books requested on CLICnet to patrons -- you must pick them up at the Library.
Books not available or checked out on CLICnet may be requested through ILL. Fill out anonline request form via ILLIAD, one for each item needed. Our staff will locate a copy of the item you need, and will inform you when you may pick it up at the St. Kate's Library. Allow a minimum of one week for processing and delivery.
ILL Policies
- Due to copyright laws, we cannot fill requests for an entire journal issue. You must submit a separate request for each article.
- There is no charge for ILL; however, we reserve the right to return a request unfilled if the cost of obtaining the item is excessive.
- There is no limit to the number of requests a person may submit. However, a large batch of requests for a single person may be processed at a rate of five to ten per day, depending on our workload.
- Requests may take between two working days and two weeks to fill, depending on who owns the item you need. Copies from the other St. Kate's campus take about two days.
- Request forms should be filled out as completely as possible. Requests containing incomplete or inaccurate citations slow processing time and may be returned. Ask a Reference Librarian for help if you have an incomplete citation.
- Books borrowed from other CLIC libraries are subject to CLIC-wide due dates and other policies with regard to reciprocity. Renewals in CLICnet may be made online.
- Non-CLIC libraries will set the due dates for materials they loan to us. Book renewal is generally not possible, although we will attempt a renewal for you if ask. Patrons are responsible for returning interlibrary loan books by the Due Date.
- Books borrowed from other libraries (CLIC and non-CLIC) may be subject to recall by the lending library. Patrons should return these books to St. Kate's ASAP so that they may be returned to the lending library.
- Lost or damaged books will be subject to CLIC-wide replacement policies and those of the lending library.
