Placing items on course reserves

Instructors may wish to place items on course reserves in the Library for students to use or view during the semester or trimester. Most items are placed on course reserve for one semester, and are returned to the collection or to the instructor at the end of the term.

Please allow at least 3 days for your reserve items to be processed and made available for student use.

Students must present a valid St. Catherine University I.D. card to use reserve materials. All items on course reserve are listed in CLICnet by selecting Course Reserves and the instructor's name or course number. Only one reserve item may be checked out at a time. Please note that all reserve items are restricted to use within the Library, except by instructor permission.

To place books, book chapters or journal articles on reserve, please use the forms provided here:

Unless the instructor requests otherwise, the title appearing on the request form will be the title used for the catalog record and the reserves list.  To prevent confusion, make sure that the title given to the Library staff corresponds with the one given to students.

The Library staff would also appreciate having a copy of the course syllabi which can be used to assist students who are unclear about reserve readings.

About print reserves:

Books, book chapters and copies of journal articles may be placed on course reserve. Print reserves are shelved behind the Library circulation desk. They are commonly checked out for 2-3 hours at a time, although an instructor can specify 24 hour, 48 hour, or one week loan periods.

If you are making a book request, you may have either the St. Kate's Library's copy of the book placed on reserve or your own personal copy. We cannot place another library's book on reserve.

If the St. Kate's Library does not own the book that you wish to place on reserve, you may request that we purchase it. To make this request, use our Purchase Request Forms. Please submit your request at least 6 weeks before students will need it.

About electronic reserves:

About

Articles and book chapters are scanned into PDF files, via Adobe Acrobat, and made available to students through CLICnet. E-reserves can be accessed on- and off-campus 24 hours a day.

Instructors may place items on electronic reserves by filling out the online request form and delivering to the Library staff a high-quality, unstapled, single-sided photocopy of each item. Photocopies will be scanned exactly as submitted and uploaded to the CLICnet reserves system.

In our experience, some e-reserve files are quite large after being scanned. Large files may take several minutes or more to download, especially from off-campus or with dial-up connections. Please advise students to be patient when accessing e-reserve items. They may call the Reference Desk with any problems that they have at 651-690-6652 (St. Paul) or 651-690-7898 (Mpls).

Alternative to electronic reserves:

Faculty can create direct links in Blackboard to many full-text articles in the Library's subscription databases. For more information see Creating Direct Links to Online Articles in Blackboard.
