Noise in the Library

College of St. Catherine Libraries Noise Policy

The St. Paul library seeks to provide an atmosphere conducive to study and research, while at the same time accommodating the learning styles of as many people as possible. We recognize the need our users may have to confer with classmates, and to use their cell phones in ways that cause a minimal amount of disturbance.

The library’s plan for dealing with noise is based on common sense and a desire to be fair and civil. This plan is as follows.

Quiet Study Room

Room 127 is the designated quiet study space. Talking must be kept to a bare minimum, and cell phone use is not permitted.

Group Studies

Group studies are designated rooms in which two or more can expect to study and confer without concern for bothering those around them. However, even with doors closed, excessive noise in group study rooms can bother those in the vicinity. If nearby users complain, library staff should assess the situation, and if appropriate, ask the group to be quieter.

Library Entry, Circulation Desk, Reference Computer Area

These areas can be very busy, and the nature of the work performed by staff and library users often creates the need for conversation. Staff should work in as quiet a way as possible, taking into account the need to communicate with users as needed. Users of these areas who prefer a quieter environment should go to other areas of the library.

Semi-Quiet Study

The remainder of the library, including all of the public spaces in the lower level, is considered a semi-quiet study area. While a reasonable amount and level of talking is allowable, loud or persistent noise (whether with others or on cell phones) will not be tolerated.

Cell Phone Use

The library recognizes the need for some people to be available to receive or make phone calls. If cell phones must be used within the library, they should be used in a manner that will not bother others. Phones should be set to vibrate or silent ring mode. We strongly prefer that users take their phones to the Atrium or to a Group Study Room to make a call. Cell phones should not be used in Room 110, Room 128, the Quiet Study Room, or near staff offices.
