Film/video booking

VHS and DVD Videos owned by the St. Catherine Library and other CLIC institutions may be borrowed for classroom viewing through Media Services. We will also attempt to locate videos available for rental from other film libraries if sufficient lead time is provided. To be sure a video is available when needed, book as far in advance of need as possible.

For assistance booking videos, contact Ann Piotrowkski at x6658. Request videos in writing via e-mail or campus mail at F-04. Please include the date and time the video is needed.

To see what videos and are available, search CLICnet (for films at St. Catherine or other CLIC libraries) and narrow by Formet (video resources); or contact Ann Piotrowski.


Classroom Equipment

Most classroom have a built in ceiling projection system. There are conections for a

laptop computer using a standard 15 pin VGA cable and plug for computer audio. Network access is provided as well and in many places there is wireless network access. You will find a built in VHS/DVD player that will dispplay using the ceiling projection system. Closed Caption decoders for the hearing impaired are built in and can be turned on or off by the user.

Most classrooms should have an overhead projector. To reserve a TV/VCR or DVD for classroom use, submit a request in writing at least 3 working days in advance of need. Workforms are available in Media Services, or you may e-mail your request to Ann Piotrowski.

Report burned out overhead lamps to x6658. Leave a message with your name and phone number, the classroom, and lamp code. The lamp will be replaced at the first opportunity.

Contact Computing Services (x6402) if you need a computer. Verify network connectivity access in the classroom in advance. Please note that most classrooms have a network connection and wireless access.

Group viewing facilities

Space for in-class viewing of film or video is available by advance reservation in the library.
  • Room 128 seats a maximum of 40 people and is equipped with a VCR/DVD and LCD projector. This room is wired to the campus network.
  • Small groups of 3 can view a video together in the AV carrel area.

Classroom taping

In-class videotaping (mini DV) service is available. Advance arrangements are required and all parties must sign a recording release form prior to taping.

Production facilities, including video editing, are also available for course-related use. Call John Lange (x6643) to arrange for instruction and to scheduling use of production facilities.

Audiotaping of Weekend College classes is also available on a limited basis. Contact Media Services (x6658) for more information.


Off-air recording of television

Videotaping of broadcast television "off-air" is available. Arrangements should be made in advance by contacting Ann Piotrowski (#6658). Media Services adheres to the Guidelines for Off-Air Recordings of Broadcast Programming for Educational Purposes. As a general rule, cable programming is not considered "broadcast" and cannot be taped for classroom use. Other restrictions apply.


Materials Checkout

Many items in the Media Reserves collection can be checked out, others must be used in Media Services department. A valid St. Kate's faculty/staff or student ID card is required to check out all Media Services items. Normal loan periods for items which circulate are:

  • Videocasettes - one week
  • Audiocassettes - 6 weeks
  • Videocassettes on reserve - in room use only

Items located at other CLIC libraries may be borrowed through Media Services. The Request feature on CLICnet generally does not work for Media Services materials (some exceptions apply based on lending library and individual item). Items borrowed from the libraries are for campus classroom use only; other restrictions may apply.

Media Services borrowing privileges are not extended to holders of special privilege cards (friends & alumnae). 


Media Services Reserve

Items in the Media Services Collection and classroom videos (VHS,DVD) may be placed on reserve in Media Services. Please keep the following guidelines in mind:

  • allow a minimum of 3 working days for processing your request
  • items borrowed from other libraries/video stores cannot be placed on reserve
  • U.S. copyright law will be strictly observed

In-library use only:

Production Services

Audio Visual Services offers the following production services to the St. Kate's community for course-related uses:

Transparencies
Overhead transparencies are $0.30 each and can be made whenever Media Services is open. The original must be either a photocopy or a laser printer page.
Videotaping
Both professional and do-it-yourself videotaping services are available in the Library and on campus. You should make arrangements at least 7 days in advance.
 
Video editing
Video editing equipment is available for use by appointment. Media Services staff will instruct you in the use of this equipment. Contact John Lange for an appointment (x6643).
 
Off-air recording
Videotaping of broadcast television "off-air" is available. Arrangements should be made in advance by contacting Ann Piotrowski (x6658). AudioVisual Services adheres to the Guidelines for Off-Air Recordings of Broadcast Programming for Educational Purposes. As a general rule, cable programming is not considered "broadcast" and cannot be taped for classroom use. Other restrictions apply.
 
Videocassette duplication
Duplication of videocassettes (NTSC standard, VHS only) is available at a charge of $5.00 per tape (user provides blank tape.) The AudioVisual Services will refuse any copy request which, in the opinion of the staff, would violate the U.S. Copyright Law.
 
High speed audiocassette duplication
High speed duplication of audiocassettes is available subject to copyright limitations. You must supply the blank tapes. There is no charge for this service.
 
 
Laminating
Lamination is done on Wednesday nights. Items of any length and up to 24" wide can be laminated at a cost of $0.50 per foot. Media Services services assumes no responsibility for items damaged in the lamination process.

Satellite programming

Satellite down-link services are available. Contact John Lange (x6643) for more information on licensing and off-air taping of satellite broadcasts.
