Using Truncation

Many computer search systems allow you to search for plurals or variant spellings of a word by typing a symbol in place of the final letters of the words. The symbol used varies by database.

  • In EBSCOhost databases, use a * .
  • In InfoTrac, use a * .
  • In CLICnet Classic use a * to match 1-5 letters, use ** for any number of letters.
  • In FirstSearch, use a + for plurals and a * for all other forms of truncation.
  • For other databases, look at the Help screens or search tips to see what the truncation symbol is.
