  • Metasearch Engines search several search engines at once.
  • Subject Guides are lists of Web sites arranged by topic. Use one of these if you are looking for general information.

Google
  • Google
    One of the largest and most popular search engines. Includes separate image, news, and other search engines.
  • Yahoo! and Alta Vista
    Two other large search engines. Separate searches for images and news; Alta Vista also searches video and audio files.
  • Ask Jeeves
    Enter a search in plain English and Ask Jeeves responds with a series of questions to focus your search.

Meta Search Engines:

Note: Multiple search engines usually retrieve fewer results per search engine than searching them individually.

  • DogPile
    One of the best multiple search engines. There are options to search news, images, audio, and multimedia.
  • Vivisimo
    Another good metasearch engine, you can specify which engines it searches.
  • KartOO
    Uses a visual display instead of a list to show results.
