Off-Campus Access

Registered students are eligible to use electronic Library resources (such as databases and journals to which the Library has paid subscriptions) from their home or office computers. You will be prompted to log in when resources are restricted to current students. Read more about logging in from off-campus.

There are several ways to authenticate (that is, to prove that you are a St. Kate's student):

1. KateWay: log into KateWay and select the Library tab. (Hint: to avoid being logged off in the middle of searching, change the timeout in KateWay. To do this, look for My Account in the upper left corner of KateWay. Change the timeout to 60 and save the change.)

2. Master of Social Work students may also log in by entering their last name and barcode from their joint-university ID (begins 20516.... ).

Computers, printers, copiers, scanner, fax

Computers: In the St. Paul Library, there are approximately 60 computers in the Library's Reference area, Library classroom #110, and computer lab. In the Minneapolis Library, there are 6 computers in the Library and an additional 15 in the nearby Computer Lab, Room #447. (Note: Rooms #110 and #447 are available use only when not being used for classes.)

Computers may be used any hour the Library is open on a first-come basis. Food is not allowed at any of the computers. All St. Kate's students have personal storage space on the campus network on the U:/ drive -- this space is only accessible from computers on campus.

Printers: Library computers are networked to a laser printer. Students who wish to print MUST LOG IN USING THEIR OWN USERNAME AND PASSWORDS. (Those who log in using the "guest" or machine-only log in will not be allowed to print.) Effect October 13, 2008, each student is allotted 500 copies per semester. There is a color printer in the Computing Help Desk (available Mon-Fri, 8-5:00).

Copiers: Public copiers are available in both Libraries. Copies cost 10 cents per page, and cash (coins or $1) are required. Copiers are not networked to student accounts.

Scanner: there is a scanner in the Computer Lab located in the St. Paul Library.

Fax: there is no fax for public use in the Libraries. In St. Paul, a fax is available at the Post Office (Mon-Fri, 8-3:30) or at the Information Desk on 2nd Floor.


Finding Books and Journal Articles

Books

CLICnet, the book catalog for St. Kate's and other Twin Cities private colleges and universities, is searchable 24/7 with no logins required. To place a hold on books we own or to request books from other libraries, use the Request it button, then enter your name and the 14-digit barcode from your student ID. Books may be picked up in about 2 days from the St. Kate's Circulation Desk and are held about 10 days. In you prefer, you can request to have CLICnet books delivered to another CLIC library (such as Bethl or Augsburg). Sorry, we do not mail books to patrons.

Journal databases

The Library subscribes to over hundred journal databases. Some of them provide complete, full text articles, while others will link you to our collections in our electronic sources. Access to journal databases is restricted to our students, faculty and staff. See above under Off-campus access to use journal databases from off-campus. Main Library databases page.

On campus, be sure to log into campus computers using your St. Kate's network username and password.

What journals does St. Kate's own?

If you already know the title of a journal, you can use Journals A to Z to find out if the Library owns it. If we own it in print, you must come to the Library to use it. If we own the title online, you will see a link to it. Follow the link to the year, issue and article you need. If we do not own the title, you can place an interlibrary loan (ILL) request for it (see more below).


Interlibrary loan (ILL)

If you need a journal that is not in the Library's collection (either in print or electronically), you may place an interlibrary loan (ILL) request. You will receive a copy of the article ( whole, complete journals cannot be requested). ILL request forms are available by following the Check for full text at St. Kate's links while searching online databases, or by using the online forms. Log in with your KateWay username and password.

To use ILL (our system is called Illiad), you will need to set up an account the first time you log in. After that, you just log to place an ILL request. Read more about Illiad.

Articles and books take about a week (more or less) to process and deliver.


Reference service

Reference Librarians provide **friendly** service to graduate students upon request. Librarians are on duty most days the Library is open, although not every hour (reference hours).

Students may contact the Reference Desk in a number of ways: in person, by phone, chat, or email.


Finding Masters Theses & Research Papers

Many departments submit to the Library the bound theses and research papers written by their masters students. Theses and research papers in our collections are catalogued, given call numbers, and are kept in the circulating collections with other items of the same subject. They can be searched on CLICnet and checked out as any other book. Read more about searching and locating masters theses.


Subject Specialist Librarians

Each graduate department is assigned a Librarian who specializes in the resources of that subject area. We encourage graduate students to make use of the Librarians' specialties when they have questions that require more than a general knowledge of their topic. You may call or email your department's Librarian for information or to schedule an appointment for a consultation.

RefWorks

RefWorks is a personal citation tool that allows you to collect, organize and store references for your research. Once you have your references in your RefWorks database, you can easily create a reference list formatted in any style (APA, MLA, etc.). All St. Kate's community members are eligible to use RefWorks. Other citation style questions

The Library provides handouts and links to authoritative Web sites that give examples on how to cite in many style. There are also manuals for most major citation styles in the Library, and Librarians are available to assist with questions and formatting. Library Web page on citation styles.


Group Study Spaces

The St. Paul campus Library has about 10 group study spaces. Group study rooms are available on a first come basis and may not be reserved.

The Minneapolis campus Library has 4 group study rooms. Sign-up sheets are posted on Fridays to reserve rooms for the following week. Rooms must be booked in person, and there is a 4 hour per day limit.


Food

The Libraries on both campuses are "food friendly." Food and beverages are allowed in the Library with the exception of classroom #110 and while working at computers. Food items may be purchased on the St. Paul campus in the dining room (across the atrium), from the bookstore or Marketplace on the 2nd floor, or from the vending machines on the 3rd floor. On the Minneapolis campus, food is available from the cafeteria on the 1st floor.


Media Services

Media Services can help you by providing CDs, videos, cameras and other production equipment. On the St. Paul campus, Media Services is located in Room #130, and in Minneapolis in Room 445B. Read more about Media Services.
