Neighbors and visitors with no formal affiliation with the university may use the libraries for research or study purposes. You are welcome to use the books, magazines and reference resources of the Libraries. Please keep in mind that our collections reflect the university's curriculum, and as such may not contain materials you would expect to find in a public library.
If you wish to use the libraries for more than a brief visit or wish to use the computers, please stop by the Circulation Desk. You will be asked to complete a form and provide a valid driver's license or other form of identification.
Neighbors are defined as those who live within the 55105 or 55116 zip codes in St. Paul, or 55454 in Minneapolis, in the immediate vicinity of the university. Neighbors who wish to check out books may purchase a Neighbor Borrower card for $50 a year (effective June 1, 2009). You will need to show a driver's license or other formal identification when you apply for a card. Privileges may be renewed annually upon receipt of the annual fee prior to the card's expiration. Applications are available at the Circulation Desk, and normally take two business days to process.
The following conditions apply to book borrowing:
Reference Librarians will provide limited assistance to visitors with questions and research needs. Please remember that our first priorities are the needs of St. Kate's students, staff, faculty, the Sisters of St. Joseph (CSJ), and Seniors auditing our classes.
Electronic resources that are not restricted by licensing agreement may be used by visitors to the libraries. Use of restricted databases (such as FirstSearch) is not permitted.
Priority for use of computer workstations is given to CSC students, staff, faculty, CSJ, and Seniors auditing our classes. Three “guest” computers in the Library Reference Room may be used by visitors to the St. Paul campus library for research purposes. Visitors wishing to use these computers should go to the Circulation desk and present a valid Minnesota Driver's license or other formal identification. The computers can be used for one hour and will automatically log off after that time.
The Libraries' Internet Use Policy also applies to neighbors and visitors.
Printing: Visitors who log into library computers using the “guest” logon will not be able to print. You may email your work to your home computer or copy to a flash drive.
ILL services are not extended to visitors. We recommend that you contact your public library for these services.
