Technical Services' Student Assistant Job Description

DEPARTMENT LOCATION AND HOURS:

The Technical Services Department of the Library is located on the ground floor of Coeur de Catherine in Room 065.  Department hours are 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.  Student Assistants' hours are flexibly scheduled around their college coursework.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

The Technical Services Department of the Library operates to support the curriculum and enhance the teaching/learning process by providing faculty, students, and staff with easy access to quality materials that will aid them in their academic pursuits.  Student Assistants will assist the staff by using computers for searching bibliographic records, for adding and deleting holdings, shelving books and periodicals, and other tasks that insure the smooth operation of the department.

POSITION SUMMARY

The student may be responsible for a variety of duties including: processing new and re-classed materials; searching the OCLC and CLICnet databases to identify and use bibliographic data; withdrawing materials and maintaining the collection; applying problem solving skills to a variety of tasks; using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access to create reports; providing clerical support services to Technical Services staff members; shelving books and periodicals as needed; checking the order of shelved materials to verify that items are placed correctly.

REQUIREMENTS:

Library background is helpful, but not essential; must possess filing and some computer skills; ability to produce accurate, neat, and often detailed work; good communication skills; ability to work independently and yet enjoy working on a team in a pleasant environment; reasonable physical stamina for bending and stretching for one to two hour periods; must be cheerful, competent, conscientious, reliable, observant and orderly.
