President Gerald Ford, 1913-2006
 |
Former President Gerald R. Ford died on December 26, 2006 at the age of 93.
The 38th president of the United States took office in August 1974 upon the resignation of President Richard Nixon. His presidency is primarily remembered for two things: restoring the country's faith in the presidency following the Watergate scandal, and pardoning Nixon for all federal crimes.
The pardon was controversial at the time and resulted in Ford's defeat in the 1976 election. However, it is now generally viewed as the right decision, earning Ford a "Profile in Courage" Award from the John F. Kennedy Library in May 2001.
