Nancy Pelosi -- Madam Speaker

Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California is expected to become the first female Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives when the 110th United States Congress begins in January 2007.
Becoming the first Madam Speaker will be the latest milestone of her career. Previous "firsts" for Ms. Pelosi include:
· First woman to hold the position of whip in either party, the second most powerful position within the party (she took the office February 2002)
· First woman to lead a major party in Congress (she succeeded Richard Gephardt as House Minority Leader in January 2003)
