Humanity over Headlines

Exhibition Dates: February 3 - March 7, 2025

Opening Reception: February 6th 11:30 AM - 1:30 PM

Between January 14 and 20, the J-Term Global Search for Justice Borderlands course took place in El Paso, Texas. The aim was to observe first-hand the actual immigration situation along the U.S./Mexico border. Eleven students and two faculty members were hosted by The Encuentro Project, a faith-based organization that provided direct experience, pertinent information, and an array of presenters to engage daily with the human and logistical realities resulting from fluctuating border policy. Presentations from immigration attorneys, community activists and organizers, historians, environmentalists, retired and active border patrol agents, social psychologists, migrants, and border crossers challenged our group to consider immigration not only as an historical and a political issue but also as a spiritual and ethical one.

Visit this exhibit and experience the border through photographs and words. You will discover evidence of resilience, injustice, and the universal human desire for safety and belonging. Allow yourself to see the humanity of those often dehumanized by the rhetoric that circulates and consider how your own values and beliefs can contribute to a compassionate and just response to immigration. Engage deeply, ask questions, share your thoughts, and let this exhibition inspire actions toward understanding and solidarity.
