The Tutoring and Learning Center provides academic support to students across the university, partners with faculty in finding ways to meet students’ diverse learning needs, and cultivates the leadership potential of the peer tutors who work in the Tutoring and Learning Center.

Students come to the TLC with a diversity of skills, knowledge, prior learning experiences, and present needs and goals. In the spirit of St. Kate’s values of academic excellence, community, and reflection, our purpose is to help students:

  • Ask questions and access support.
  • Use and develop critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • Apply learning to new situations.
  • Engage in relationships and connections that promote learning.
  • Appreciate complexity, ambiguity, and non-closure.
  • Grow in confidence as they prepare to lead and influence.

We are here to make better learners.  We work with individuals, not just the problem sets they bring.  We model, guide, suggest and probe. In this way, we offer strategies for making sense of new challenges.

Nursing mentors provide support to beginning nursing students. Because they are enrolled in the same program, they are invested in the success of their peers, and are an important part of the Nursing program and its success. Peer support, modeling, and academic support are all intended to help nursing students build confidence, self-efficacy, and knowledge, similar to the holistic model of the nursing curriculum itself.

On this website, you will find an overview of the Tutoring and Learning Center (formerly the O'Neill Center for Academic Development) and its values, community,  students, and history.
